TUKES: Errors in the electrical installation of heat pumps

The Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency (Tukes) has reported that it has recently become aware of dangerous shortcomings in the electrical installation of heat pumps. The companies that carried out the electrical installations did not have the required electrical work permit. Unlawful and unprofessional electrical installations can give rise to a risk of electric shock or fire and, in the event of damage, liability for compensation.

Refrigeration installations and related electrical work are all subject to licensing and must have the permits required by law. Companies and individuals working in the refrigeration sector must apply for a qualification before they start work. If a company installing heat pumps carries out the electrical work required to connect the pump to the mains in addition to the refrigeration installation, an electrical work permit is also required.

The company's electrical and refrigeration installation rights can be checked in the register on the Tukes website https://rekisterit.tukes.fi/toiminnanharjoittajat

What to do if you come across electrical work that you think is unprofessional or dangerous?

  • Unplug all electrical appliances and stop using the socket.
  • Contact an electrical contractor who will make the installation safe. The contractor who carried out the installation is liable for the repair. If the installer is not known, you will have to pay for the repair yourself.
  • The proper installation of electrical works can be inspected by a goods inspector (HTT) approved by the Central Chamber of Commerce, for example.
  • In case of serious errors, contact Tukes directly and request an investigation.

24 Center always makes sure that all refrigeration, electricaland other contractors have the necessary permits and skills to do the job.

Can the drain withstand boiling water?

Modern drains can usually withstand boiling water well, and the occasional spill of hot water will not cause immediate damage. Plastic PVC pipes can withstand temperatures of around 60-80°C, and boiling water temperatures drop below 50°C within seconds of being poured down the drain. The safest method is to run cold water at the same time and pour it slowly in small batches. In older properties, be more careful and contact a professional if you notice leaks, unusual noises or slow draining.
