water damage took by surprise

Water damage took you by surprise?

Water damage is a nasty surprise for anyone. Water leaks are the most common damage to homes. More than 40 000 leaks occur every year, which means more than 100 incidents every day.

When water damage strikes, speed is of the essence. You need to locate the leak immediately and stop it before it causes more damage. If you can't do this on your own, contact the 24 Centre Emergency Response Centre immediately on 0100 2470. We will send the nearest professional to help you with the leak.

In the event of water damage, the occupants of a damp-damaged apartment often have to move out of their home while the damage is dried and repaired. Water damage is a serious damage that causes material loss and inconvenience to the daily life of the occupants.

It is impossible to avoid any damage. But here are a few tips to help you reduce the risk of water damage:

Let the professionals install your appliances, such as dishwasher, washing machine and freezer. Improper installation can later backfire and cause water damage. If you have installed the appliances incorrectly yourself, the insurance will not cover anything!

Many people don't realise that the fridge and freezer can also cause water damage. The risk is particularly high if the fridge or freezer is located in a place that is dusty or damp, or where there is insufficient air circulation.

A safety ladder must be placed under the refrigerator and washing machine if there is no floor drain or the floor structure is such that any leakage is not immediately visible. A ladder will not directly prevent water damage, but can help to detect and minimise damage.

The washing machine's shut-off valve must be closed when the washing machine is not in use.

Don't leave the dishwasher or washing machine on when you leave the house, even for a moment.

Get a damp and leak alarm for your home that detects and alerts you to dampness in the home. A moisture alarm can be compared to a fire alarm.

In the event of water damage, do the following:

  • Turn off the tap or main water supply.
  • Dry the spilled loose water as thoroughly as possible.
  • If you live in a block of flats or a terraced house, report the water damage to the property manager or maintenance company.
  • If you live in a detached house, call the 24 Center hotline on 0100 2470, which will assess the situation and send a professional if necessary.
  • File a claim with your insurance company.
