safe 112 day

Have a safe 112 day!

112 Day is a joint campaign by Finland's safety organisations to improve everyday safety. 112 Day has become a tradition and has been celebrated in Finland since 1997. The campaign is celebrated every year on 11 February. The campaign lasts for a whole week. 2008 was the first European 112 Day. 112 Day is a reminder of Europe's single emergency number 112 and how to use it correctly. 112 Day draws the attention of Finns to the prevention of accidents and injuries at home, at work and in their leisure time - small everyday actions and choices that each of us can make to improve our own safety and that of our loved ones.

Here are 3 tips to help you prevent accidents and injuries effectively:

Distract the burglar and prevent a burglary:

  • Upgrade your home locks and get an alarm system and camera surveillance
  • Lock your windows and doors and use a safety lock when you leave the house
  • Keep your yard lit at dusk
  • Don't tell the world about your empty home on any social media channels

This will prevent a fire from starting:

  • Install smoke alarms in every room and check them monthly
  • Update your initial firefighting skills
  • Get a fire blanket as a minimum and keep it in a visible place where it can be easily and quickly accessed if necessary.
  • If a fire starts and you cannot put it out, leave the scene and call 112

Water damage prevention:

  • Floor drains should be cleaned weekly due to the risk of clogging.
  • Check and, if necessary, repair the waterproofing and seams in sanitary facilities
  • The shut-off valves of washing machines and dishwashers must be closed when the machines are not in use. These appliances must be monitored when in use.
  • The washing machine outlet should not be placed directly into the floor drain, as the tightness of the edges of the floor drain may be uncertain. The outlet hose should be installed, for example, in the outlet pipework of a sink.
  • Keep a leak detector under washing machines and refrigerators to detect any leak as early as possible

If water damage occurs:

  • Take immediate action to minimise water damage.
  • Contact the property manager or the maintenance company and file a claim with the insurance company.
  • Call 24 Center on 0100 2470 to get a plumber on site the same day
  • The amount of compensation and the right to receive it depends on the cause of the damage.
