When and why should you replace your electric heater?

When should you replace your electric heater with a new one?

The modern electric heater has found its way into almost every home, making sauna bathing quick and easy. To get the most enjoyment and benefit from your sauna, you should invest in the heart of the sauna - an efficient and effective heater. A good sauna has a uniquely important place in the hearts of Finns. The soft warmth of the sauna also has a positive effect on health. For example, it improves blood circulation, reduces the risk of heart disease, helps muscles to recover, deepens sleep, reduces stress and relaxes both physically and mentally..

An electric heater is worth replacing....

  • When the stove no longer heats properly
  • When the sauna has become a power hog
  • When you need a new look for your sauna
  • When the life of the stove has come to an end

The stove is not heating properly

The most common reason for a sauna not heating properly is usually either a broken heater resistor or aging stones. A single resistor can break and the heater will no longer heat properly, resulting in a weak steam. The heater may therefore work, but inefficiently, even if one of the resistors is broken. A heater with a broken resistor should not be used for safety reasons, as other defects or a fire hazard may result. In fact, a timer or resistor failure is a typical cause of electric stove fires. A faulty resistor itself is rarely responsible for a sauna fire, but the electrical fault and/or overheating of the stove will ignite combustible materials in the vicinity of the stove. In any case, the replacement of the broken resistor and timer and the installation of the heater in the mains should always be carried out by a professional.

In general, it is no longer worth replacing the resistors in a heater that is more than 10 years old, and in most cases it is even cheaper to replace it with a new heater. The lifetime of an electric stove is about 10-15 years.

If the fault is not in the resistor, check when you last changed the stones in the stove. Depending on the quality of the stones and the use of the sauna, the replacement interval for stove stones is 1-3 years. If you heat your sauna on average twice a week, it would be a good idea to change the stones as often as every year. Sometimes simply rearranging the stones is enough, or at least buys you a little extra time before replacing them. With heavy use, the stones crumble, become compacted and thus the air circulation in the stove is reduced and the efficiency decreases.

However, the most effective way to improve the efficiency of your sauna is to replace the stove with a completely new one. This way, you can be sure that the heater is working properly and that the sauna will certainly offer the best possible conditions for a relaxing sauna evening.

The sauna has become an electricity guzzler

An electric sauna is one of the biggest single consumers of electricity in your home, so an electricity bill can cause unpleasant extra costs, especially if a resistor breaks. If If an old and inefficient heater heats slowly, it will therefore also consume more electricity. More than 50% of electricity is used to preheat the sauna. With a new energy-efficient heater, you can save up to 30% on sauna heating costs. A modern and functional heater is an economical, safe, ecological choice that works reliably and heats up quickly.

The most commonly used electric stoves are usually six kilowatt stoves. If the sauna is heated for 45 minutes, the average electrical energy consumption is about 4.5 kilowatts. The cost of heating has increased significantly in recent years, with the cost per kilowatt hour rising to as much as 20 cents per kilowatt. This means that at this level of electricity prices, heating would cost around €0.90 per kWh. Overall, however, the electric heater only accounts for an average of 5% of household electricity consumption, so if the pleasure and enjoyment of sauna bathing is important to you, the cost is worth it!

When you need a new look and modern technology for your sauna

Now more than ever, people are looking to make their homes more comfortable, and as well as decorating other rooms, many people also like to pay attention to the visual appearance of the sauna.

Sauna boards can be easily sanded and varnished or stained with a new colour, as can wall panelling. Lighting can be updated to significantly change the look and feel of the sauna. The sauna can also be given a new look by introducing different decorative elements, such as lanterns, decorative objects or beautiful sauna textiles. In the case of such an upgrade, it is also worth replacing the electric heater with a new one, so that the overall harmony is maintained and the sauna fulfils its most important function, which is to provide a good and sufficiently hot bath.

Stoves have evolved rapidly in recent years, both in terms of efficiency and appearance. There is a wide variety of stoves to choose from, ranging from traditional basic models to more unusual and eye-catching design solutions. It's a good idea to think about whether you want to replace the old wall-mounted model with a new heater or whether you want to replace it with a floor-mounted model or even a model that can be built into the ceiling. Modern pillar stoves or unusual flat stoves are elegant and beautiful, and will give off gentle, moist heat.

Modern stoves no longer need to be controlled manually with fixed controls on the stove, but you can choose a stove that can be conveniently controlled by a remote control panel, for example in the dressing room. Digital wall panels also provide a convenient temperature display, making it easier to control the heating time. Most modern smart heaters can even be controlled remotely via a phone app.

The lifetime of an electric stove is 10-15 years

If a problem occurs with an electric heater that is more than 10 years old, it is often a more sensible solution to replace it with a new one. For example, it is usually not worth replacing the resistors in a heater that is more than 10 years old, and in most cases it is even cheaper to replace it with a new one. The lifetime of an electric heater is about 10-15 years.
