Cooling your home is easy with an air-source heat pump.

Tips for cooling your home

During the summer heat, living comfort suffers in many homes due to too high a room temperature. Too hot room temperature can not only bring health concerns, but the quality of sleep can also be significantly reduced. If you look at the matter purely from a technical building point of view, a home that is too hot and slowly cooling down can damage the materials of the property, which in turn brings extra money worries in the long run.

In this blog post, we'll discuss how you can mechanically assist in cooling your home and what you need to consider when purchasing a device. We'll also share a few helpful tips on how to lighten the load on your equipment while saving money and reducing your environmental impact.

Choose the right device

Supermarkets and home appliance stores sell a wide range of cooling devices. However, before you go shopping for equipment, you should stop and think about what kind of space you want to cool. For a studio or two-room apartment of a few dozen square meters, a tower fan or a mobile air conditioner may suffice, for example. On the other hand, small devices are not enough to cool a large detached house of more than a hundred square metres, as they only cool locally in one room.

It also matters where you place the cooling device. The portable device can be easily placed in the desired location and tested where in the apartment it can be used to the maximum. In general, it is worth positioning the device so that it directs hot air out.

When choosing the location of a fixed cooling device, such as an air source heat pump, it is worth considering, for example, what kind of benefit you want from it. In addition, the choice of location depends on the number of rooms in the property and how many floors need to be cooled. It is also worth noting that especially the indoor unit needs to be cleaned a couple of times a month, so it is not worth placing it very far beyond the reach of the vacuum cleaner stem.

How can you cool your home affordably?

In addition to mechanical cooling methods, passive cooling methods should be used. With these, you can save on your electricity bill and reduce the energy consumption of cooling equipment. In addition, you help keep your home cool even when you are not at home and the cooling equipment needs to be closed.

Protect windows

  • By closing the blinds, you prevent the sun's heat from entering the interior.
  • Blackout curtains will help not only on bright summer nights, but also prevent the penetration of the sun's rays into the interior.
  • Outside, above the windows, you can install an awning, which effectively repels the sun's rays from entering the interior.
  • Make sure that door and window insulation is in order.
  • If you want to keep windows open, open them from the shadow side of the property.
  • Ventilate, especially in the evening and at night, when the average daily temperature is at its lowest.
  • Use reflective films on windows to reduce heat and glare.

Avoid keeping electrical appliances on

  • Heating a sauna in the same property should be avoided in the summer, as it heats the entire apartment and increases humidity.
  • Avoid cooking in the oven and on the stove.
  • Also, avoid using washing machines. However, if laundry needs to be washed, dry the laundry outdoors if possible. You will get a fresh summer scent in your laundry and avoid moisture accumulation indoors.
  • Remember to turn off electrical appliances (including computers) when you are not using them.
  • Use energy-efficient LED bulbs that generate less heat than traditional incandescent bulbs.

Making the most of the yard

  • If you have your own yard, you should consider their ability to provide shade when choosing plantings and trees. Shady plants and trees filter the hardest sunshine, which cools the home as well.
  • Build a pergola or shady canopy on the terrace or yard.
  • Use light-colored materials in yard furniture and structures, as they reflect sunlight and stay cooler.
